Grace Grant

Funeral services for Grace D. Winkelman Grant, age 76, were held Saturday in the Bader-Peet Chapel in Lusk with Rev. Mark Lohr officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Grace died Monday, Oct. 18, in the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital in Lusk. She was born April 21, 1917, in Hodgeman County, Kan., the daughter of Rose and Ernest Winkelman. They moved to a ranch near Oelrichs, S.D. when Grace was 6 years old. She lived there until she married Jack Grant on April 6, 1940. They moved to Dawes County, Neb., where Grace began her teaching career in the rural schools. When Jack went to Burma and China with the Army's Remount Division during WWII, Grace went to Garden City, Kans., to live with her folks. When Jack returned, they moved back to Crawford, Neb. where Jack was a service manager and Grace taught the 4th grade for 12 years. Grace was an educator for 38 years. In 1976 they moved to Lusk to manage the Kwik Stop Station. They retired in 1980 and traveled extensively until Jack passed away in 1985. Grace remained at their home in Lusk until the time of her death.

Grace was a member of Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma of Newcastle, Wyo., The Gumbo Hustlers Extension Club and the American Legion Auxiliary of Crawford, Neb.

Besides her husband, Grace was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her sister Clara Stewart of Portland, Ore.; 4 sister-in-laws, Madelyn Winkelman of Wichita, Kan., Valasta Winkelman Hamous of Chadron, Neb., Ruth Grant Kirby of Chadron, Neb. and Joy Wilson Grant of Abernathy, Tex.; also, many nieces and nephews of whom Grace was fond. Grace also claimed her 4th graders as her kids since she had none of her own.

Memorials to the Grace Grant Scholarship Fund will be appreciated by the family, or to the Lusk Senior Center.

For those who wish, memorials to either the Grace Grant Scholarship fund or the Senior Center have been established.

In 1964 they moved to Newcastle. Grace taught there for 12 years.
