Dell DeHaven, Early Resident, Dies Sept. 24
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. from the United Methodist Church in Harrison for Delbert I. DeHaven who died September 24. Rev. C. Robert Tod officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery at Chadron.
Mrs. Todd, organist, and Mrs. Floyd Hall, pianist, accompanied Mrs. Bill Coffee who sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Casket bearers were nephews James, Robert and Dennis Hill, Clair McIntosh, David Corbin, and grandson Bill Baker. Honorary Casket bearers were Bryan Larsen, Jim Phipps, George Wichersham, Julian Phipps, Tress Powell, Martin Koch, Floyd Hall, John Broderick and Allen Jordan.
Mr. DeHaven was born near Hay Springs, Neb., January 19, 1900, the eldest son of Wilbur and Lula DeHaven. In 1908, he moved with his parents to Sioux County where they homesteaded south of Harrison.
On November 3, 1920, he was married to Francis Hill, and three children were born.
In 1931 his family moved to Wyoming where he worked eight years on highway construction. In 1939 they returned to Sioux County where he ranched for 13 years 17 miles northeast of Harrison. Due to poor health he retired from ranching in 1952 and then worked at the Port of Entry in Harrison for 12 years until it was closed in January 1965. He made Harrison his home until he died suddenly on September 24.
He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife Frances; two sons, Dale of Harrison and Richard of Chadron; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Powell of Chadron; one brother, Vernon of Anchorage, Alaska; one sister, Ida Larsen of Alcester, S. D.; eight grandchildren, Mrs. Bill Baker of Harrison, Mrs. Scott Malcom of Loveland, Colo., Mrs. Mike Singpiel of Rapid City, S.D., Robert Powell, Jr., Chris, Cherie, Janet, and Alvin DeHaven of Chadron; and one great-grandchild, Barbara Baker of Harrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frances McIntosh.
