Beverly Currey, Riverton speech pathologist and audiologist, died Thursday morning, Sept. 30, following a four month illness. At the time of her death, Mrs. Currey was on leave from her position as audiologist, serving the hearing-handicapped students of the Riverton, Shoshoni and Wind River School Districts.
Memorial service was held at St. James Episcopal Church in Riverton on Saturday. Father Joseph M. Harte officiated.
Mrs. Currey was born August 12, 1934, to Gladys and Richard Busteed of Cody. She attended Cody schools and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1957, earning a M. S. degree from the University of Montana in 1971. She did further advanced study at the University of Utah and Colorado State University. At the University of Wyoming, she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, and her beauty was recognized when she was named WYO Sweater Girl.
On August 21, 1955, she married Keith Currey at Cody. Mr. Currey was reared in Lusk and a graduate of Lusk High School.
After teaching in the elementary school at Manville and teaching English, speech and drama in Green River High School, she came to Riverton in 1961, where she developed the speech pathology program for School District No. 25. In recent years, she wrote the Phonic Ear Project for the district and authored the model program "Project Hear" for the Wyoming State Department of Education and the district, which was validated statewide as other school districts pattered their programs after it.
Mrs. Currey was a member of the Riverton, the Wyoming, and the National Education Associations, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society of which she was a past president, and Wyoming Speech and Hearing Association. In 1967 she was named Outstanding Young Educator by the Riverton Junior Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, the Seroptomists, the Eastern Star, and the Daughters of the Nile.
Survivors include her husband Keith; a daughter Kim of Salt Lake City; a son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Mary Jo and granddaughter Jillian of Pueblo, Colorado; her mother-in-law Tressia of Riverton and formerly of Lusk; and her aunt and uncle, Bill and Joyce Moore, of St. Charles, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for cremation in Billings. The family wishes that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the American Cancer Society or another charitable organization.
