Richard "Dick" Arlen Glandt
A memorial service for Richard “Dick” Arlen Glandt will be held at First Baptist Church on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. He died Monday, Sept. 26, at Community Hospital in Torrington.
Dick was born to Herman August Glandt and Rosie Ida Hecklebech on Aug. 25, 1935 in Lusk. He attended school in north Goshen County and moved to Torrington for high school. He supported himself through school with various part-time jobs and graduated in 1953. He postponed college for a year, then took classes at GCCC, now Eastern Wyoming College.
In 1956, he volunteered for the draft, returning home in 1958. In April 1960, he married Marilyn Gillaspie; the two of them moved to Laramie and alternated working and attending college. He graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural Economics in 1963 and 1967.
He began his career at the Office of the Market Administrator, Dairy Division, Denver, in 1965 and transferred to the USDA Dairy Division, in 1974 where he remained until his retirement in 1993.
Retirement opened new doors. The couple bought a farm north of Torrington and expanded their hobbies. Dick loved working on old tractors and cars, accumulating many, some still in process. He went to Alaska several times to fish, but also to help friends with potato planting or harvest. They traveled abroad, visiting several countries in Europe and making five trips to tour Australia with their neighbors from college. Dick went to China for several weeks.
Dick was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Denver, transferring to a sister church in Washington, D.C. Returning to Torrington, they joined First Baptist Church, where they’d been married; Dick devoted time and energy to serve the needs of the church and its outreach.
He was a Mason and served as Master, then several terms as secretary and as treasurer. He was a member of the EWC Foundation, and the local and state historical societies. He was president of the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), then president of the Wyoming Federation NARFE. He participated in activities of the Old Tractor Club.
He shared his musical talent. In high school he played in the band and sang in the choir. He and three classmates formed a quartet, the Four Flats. He participated in his church choirs and in the local community choir.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; their two sons, Bruce and Darryl; daughters-in-law Francine and Shannon; grandchildren, Jack and Molly; and brother, Dan, and his wife, Catherine. He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, the scholarship fund at Eastern Wyoming College or to one’s favorite charity.
