Sheep Herder Found Dead at Boner's

Lew Porter, sheepherder at the ranch of Mrs. Izetta Boner and sons, some 30 miles north of Lusk, was found dead by Ed Boner when he visited the sheep camp of Saturday, October 30.

The man had started work only the Wednesday before, when young Boner had taken him to the sheep camp and had filled his water container and left him food. The following two days proved rainy and the roads in bad condition, so the camp was not visited again until Saturday, when Ed Boner again made the trip to the camp.

Arriving at the sheep wagon he noticed that the groceries he had left on Wednesday had not been touched, and began looking around for the herder, who was nowhere in sight, but he did see the dog at some distance, and going to where it was, found the lifeless body of the man.

Coroner George Earl Peet and Sheriff Ben Brown were notified and investigated the circumstances. It seemed that the man had died from a heart attack the day he had arrived at the camp, and from the papers found on him it was learned that he was 73 years of age and had a sister , Mrs. Grace Young of Omaha, Neb. Mrs. Young was contacted, but asked Mr. Peet to bury him, so graveside services were  her by Rev. Lawrence P. Juell at the Lusk cemetery on Monday, November 1.
