Rufus Smith
Fatal Accident at Jireh Mine
Coroner Louger was summoned to Jireh, Sunday, to hold an inquest on the death of Rufus Smith, who was accidentally killed Saturday while at work in the coal mines north of Jireh, operated by Koontz & Baker. The coroner elicited the information that while the unfortunate man was busy breaking coal in a recumbent position, a mass of gumbo fell from the roof of the workings and hitting him squarely on the back of the head, broke his neck. The deceased leaves a family to mourn his untimely fate and a pall of gloom overshadows the district on account of the fact that these mines have been operated only a short time and especial care has been taken to avoid accidents. His immediate family and relatives have the sincere sympathy of the whole community. The funeral took place Monday at Jireh and was largely attended.
