Harry Lewis Hassed
Lusk Youth Takes Own Life im Oklahoma Last Thurs.
Henry Lewis Hassed, 19 years of age, and one of the most highly respected young men of Lusk, took his own life in a hotel room at Lawton, Okla., on Thursday, Nov. 10th.
The whole community was shocked and grieved that one so young should , for some unknown cause, decide he could not go on. Relatives are at a loss as to a cause for the rash act.
Harry was a student at the Nebraska University at Linclon this year where he was making good grades and had nothing there to cause him to become despondent, he made friends readily and as he left no word, he carried with him his motive.
Harry was born in Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 14th, 1919 and spent his early boyhood in Lusk. In 1927 he moved with his parents to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he lived for eight years then the family returned to Lusk where he tokk his last two years of high school.
He was graduated with honors, being awarded the scholarship to the Wyoming University at Laramie which institution he attended last year.
During the vacation period after high school he worked as reporter at the Lusk Herald office until leaving for the university.
This fall he registered as a law student at the Nebraska University but withdrew from there November 4th saying he was leaving to go to work.
The remains arrived in Lusk in Monday, and funeral services were held from the Peet Mortuary Funeral Parlors in Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock.
Rev. J.C. Blackman of Cheyenne, minister of the Congregational church of that city, assisted by Rev.H.P. Evans of the Baptist church of Lusk conducted the services. Music was furnished by Mrs. H.J. Templeton, Mrs. Robert Taylor, J.M. Hungate and F.B. Kuns with Mrs. J.P. Watson presiding at the piano. Cyril Adams of Casper, and boyhood friend of Harry's played appropriate selections on the violin.
The pall bearers were Walter Fernau, Thos. Costlow, Donald Vickory, Lee Best, Gene Roll, Clem Burge, Milton Higgins and Cyril Adams.
Harry was a member of the National Guard and this organizations attended in a body and conducted the services at the cemetery.
Harry was a member of the Congregational church and was much interested in religion and had been very active in the Young People's work. He was of a literary trend of mind and had a pleasing personality and gave great promise of what the future might hold for him.
Many friends mourn with the family at his loss.
He is survived by his father Dr. W.H. Hassed, his mother, Mrs. Hugh Nutt, a sister, Ruth Hassed, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Coble of Springview, Nebr. and cousin, Billy Hassed of Lusk. Other cousins in Nebraska, and the Mable Hassed family at Wheaton,Ill., are also among those left to mourn his passing.
