Chuck Shelton Killed in Auto Wreck Monday
POPULAR OIL DRILLER KILLED WHEN CAR STRIKES ICY SPOT ON HIGHWAY 26, BETWEEN TORRINGTON AND NEBRASKA LINE
C.A. Shelton, about 38, one of the oldest drillers in this section of the state in point of service, was instantly killed Monday afternoon, January 17, when the car he was driving skidded and overturned in the borrow pit on Highway 26, between Torrington and Henry, Neb., about a half-mile west of the Wyoming-Nebraska line.
Carl Eggleston, 31, Mr. Shelton's brother-in-law, who was riding with him at the time, suffered minor bruises and a sprained right arm, but was brought to Lusk late Monday evening.
Both men were employed in the Lance Creek oil field and were on their way to Oklahoma City, OK., where Mr. Shelton intended visiting his wife who had been in the hospital there.
Shelton was driving when the car evidently struck an icy spot in the road and skidded, according to V.H. Montgomery, highway patrolman, who investigated the accident. Both men were thrown through the top of the car. Mr. Shelton was undoubtedly killed instantly, his neck being broken, according to information received from Torrington. The body was taken in charge by Coroner Colyer of Goshen county.
Shelton and Eggleston left Lusk Monday afternoon and were on their way to Oklahoma. Mrs. Shelton had been in poor health for some time and was in a hospital at Oklahoma City. He filled his care at the Standard Station just before he left.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Shelton were well known and had many friends in Lusk and Lance Creek. For a time about a year ago Mrs. Shelton managed the Jordan rooming house and the two children, a boy and girl, attended the Grade School and the congregational Sunday School here.
The body was prepared for burial in Torrington and shipped to Oklahoma for interment.
