Maysie G. McVay
Funeral services for Maysie G. McVay, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Glendo School Gym, with Jim Wilson conducting.
Inurnment will be in Horseshoe Cemetery near Glendo.
Mrs. McVay died Feb.2, 2006, at her daughter's home near Glendo of natural causes.
She was born in Lusk on Dec. 31, 1914, to Lake C. and Autumn (Mayes) Harris. She was raised in Jay Em. She was 4 when her mother died from the flu, so she was raised by her father and his parents.
She started school at age 4 and helped in her father's store at a young age. She attended high school in Laramie at Ivinson Boarding School and graduated from high school in Waupun, Wis., at 14. She attended summer school in Walla Walla Wash., and received a normal teacher's certificated from Chadron State College.
She taught for two years at Fairview School east of Jay Em, two years at Moore Springs School west of Jay Em and one year at Fort Laramie.
She married Francis Hewitt McVay in 1937, and they had 11 children. Due to her husband's work with Farm Security, they lived in Lingle, Lusk, Riverton, Laramie and Jay Em before settling in Glendo in 1951.
They opened McVay Sawmill and Lumber Yard. She cleaned motel rooms, took in ironing and sold worms and eggs. After the children were raised she worked at the Glendo Post Office for numerous years, as well as being a substitute teacher and later a teacher's aide at Glendo School. She retired from the school system in 1994.
She will be remembered for her good nature, sharp wit, love of children and helping them learn, her great love of books, flowers horses, mountains and rock hunting. She was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up with current events.
She is survived by daughters and their spouses Marjorie (Don) Sanborn, Hazel (Gailard) Mudgett, Dena (Gary) Robinson, Edith (Michael) DeNoyer, and Beth (John) Stryker; sons and their spouses (Francis (Karen) McVay, James McVay, Lane McVay, Harold (Deborah) McVay and Donald McVay;35 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; seven great-great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Francis; daughter Francis Irene Johnson; step-daughter Mary Lou Maynard; brother James Harris; and baby sister Autumn Harris.
Memorials may be made to the Glendo branch of the Platte Valley Library or to the Horseshoe Cemetery for beautification.
Gorman Funeral Homes-Converse Chapel of Douglas is in charge of arrangements.
