C.A. BARBER, PIONEER PEACE OFFICER, DIES SUDDENLY AT BROTHER'S HOME, GLENROCK

Funeral Services Held in Lusk Thursday Afternoon

Columbus A. Barber, pioneer Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff of Laramie and Converse County, died suddenly at his Brother George's ranch south of Glenrock, Tuesday evening, March 10, presumably from a heart attack.

Mr. Barber apparently was in good health and had been working about the house during the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Barber were gone from the ranch an hour or so, leaving him to watch several loaves of bread which were baking in the oven. He was instructed when to take the bread from the oven, and had taken care of that, and evidently a few minutes later was stricken with the heart attack. When Mr. and Mrs. George Barber returned home they found him lying on the kitchen floor, death evidently having occurred only a short time before they arrived.

Funeral services were held in Lusk from the Congregational Church on Thursday afternoon, Rev. George D. Jenkins officiating, with the Peet Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Harry Hargraves. M.P. Vollmer, Will Hassed, A.F. Vogel, Chris Joss and N.E. Hartwell.

Mr. Barber was deputy sheriff in Converse county over a period of about twenty years, under Sheriffs Williams Virden Hazen and Messenger. He was elected Sheriff in 1910, serving one term, after which he moved back to his home in Lusk.

Mr.Barber is survived by three brothers, George and John of Glenrock, Francis of Ogden, Utah, and three sisters, Anna Gerard of Sumner, Washington; Lizzie Clowes of Steubenville, Ohio, and Sadie Spencer of Salem, Oregon; and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Velma Thompson of Douglas, Wyo.

For many years he was in the blacksmith business in Lusk. He had been a resident of Lusk for over fifty years, coming here in February of 1886. He was born July 24, 1864, in Reedsville, Ohio, and was untied in marriage to Emily Randolph of Reedsville, Ohio, at Lusk, May 15, 1893, and except for the time he was in Douglas, he has been a continuous resident of Lusk.
