Funeral held for Alex Nortness
Funeral service for Alex Nortness, 88, was held April 15 at the Houston Funeral Home in Crawford. Mr. Nortness had died in a Scottsbluff hospital on April 12.
The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Carlyle Smith. Burial was in the Crawford Cemetery. A memorial to the heart fund has been established.
Mr. Nortness was born December 7, 1886 in Stanhope, Iowa, the son of Charles and Nellie Nortness and in 1895 came with his parents to western Nebraska.
He married Effie Freel on June 15, 1910 in Harrison, and they made their first home 18 miles northeast of Harrison where they homesteaded. In 1939 the moved to South Dakota, and in 1941 to Morrill. They moved to Mitchell in September of 1968.
Surviving is a son Adolph of Mitchell; four daughters, Mrs. Nellie Hoffman of Crawford, Mrs. Bertha Leeling of Harrison, Mrs. Myrtle James of Mitchell, and Effie Mae James of Council, Idaho; two brothers, Henry Nortness of Kalamo, Wash., and Carl Nortness of Onalaska, Wash; two sisters, Mrs. Artie Bell of Shelton, Wash., and Mrs. Carrie Sternberg of Tuleake, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and three great, great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife February 17, 1969, and by three sisters and four brothers.
