Wilma Haase

Memorial services for Wilma (Newman) Haase, 88, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today, June 16, at the United Methodist Church in Torrington by the Rev. Ora Dailey.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington and private family burial has been held.

She died June 14, 2005, at Goshen Care Center in Torrington.

Born Jan. 14, 1917, near Van Tassell, she was the eldest of eight children of Gertrude (Shelbourne) and W.H. Newman; was raised in northern Goshen County; educated at Pleasant Lawn and Bush schools; and graduated from Torrington High School in 1934.

She attended the University of Wyoming, Black Hills State Teacher's College in Spearfish, S.D., and Colorado Teacher's College in Greeley; and taught in rural schools in the Prairie Center area for five years.

On Oct. 25, 1941, she married Alvin D. Haase in Harrison, Neb.

The couple ranched 30 miles north of Torrington until moving west of town in 1979.

She was a member of the UMC and United Methodist Women, AARP, Extension Homemakers, Historical Society, and Goshen Cattlewomen; was a 4-H leader; and led the local Arthritis Support Group for five years. She was known for her smile and kindness toward others.

Survivors include seven children, Keith and his wife of Lynnwood, Wash., Charles and his wife of Morrison, Colo., Karen Hartung and her husband of Torrington, Betty Malamaire of Gillette, Eunice Azbill and her husband of Mesa, Ariz., Joyce Peterson and her husband of Wheatland and Lorraine Terrell and her husband of Gillette; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 5, 1991, after 49 years of marriage; five sisters, Donna Fisher, Violet Bruton, Marge Howard, Maxine Berryman and Idell Chabot; and a brother, Keith Newman.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to Torrington UMC, Goshen Care Center, or the American Heart Association.
