Vernon Keener Sr. Last Rites Are Held
Last rites for Vernon M. Keener Sr., 73, Scottsbluff, were held December 23 at the Benson-Jolliffe Funeral Home with Dr. Arthur W. Taylor officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. He had died December 19 at a Scottsbluff hospital.
He was born February 20, 1890 at Searsboro, Ia., and received his education in Iowa schools graduating from Ginnell College. He taught school in Iowa for four years, then came to western Nebraska where he taught for another nine years.
He homesteaded in Sioux County in 1915 where he resided until moving to a farm north of Scottsbluff in 1939 residing there since. He was married to Elizabeth Rohde on August 20, 1918 at Chadron. He served with the National Guard during World War II and had been a member of school boards in both Sioux and Scotts Bluff counties.
Mr. Keener was affiliated with the Congregational Church.
Survivors include his widow, two sons, Vernon M. Jr. of Route 2, Mitchell, and Harold A. of Marsland; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Norine and Mrs. Betty Jo Kreman, both of Scottsbluff; one brother, Dr. Harry A. Keener of La Jolla, Calif.; and 15 grandchildren. Two brothers and one daughter died previously.
