Lewis Bates Services Are Held in Oregon
Funeral services were held August 31 at Conyonville, Ore. for Lewis N. Bates, 69, who died in the Glen Forest hospital in Canyonville August 26 from a cerebral hemorrage. The Rev. John Fenderson officiated. Burial was in the Canyonville cemetery.
Lewis Norman Bates was born in Long Pine, Nebr. March 20, 1888. He attended school in Long Pine and grew to manhood in that vicinity. He came to Niobrara county and homesteaded 12 miles northeast of town on the Hat Creek Divide.
In May of 1915 he and Mary Catherine Mudra were married. They were the parents of nine children.
The family resided in Niobrara County for several years after which they moved to Walla Walla, Wash. After some years spent in Idaho and Wyoming they returned from Lusk to Oregon in 1955 and located at Canyonville.
Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Mary, four daughters Mrs. Wilma Cady, Tri City, Ore; Mrs. Thelma Irons, So. Sioux City, Nebr.; Mrs. Nina Beckstrom, Libby, Mont.; Mrs. Wanda Dawson, Sandpoint, Idaho; four sons: Lewis Jr., Surprise Valley, Ore.; Manly, Denver; Gene and Ronald, Canyonville. Also one sister and ten grandchildren survive. Mr. Bates was preceded in death by one infant son, two sisters, one brother and his parents.
He was a member of the Eagles lodge for 35 years. He was well known to many people in Niobrara county.
