Last Rites Held For Mrs. Geo. Howell

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, August 27th 2:30 o'clock at the Peet Mortuary Chapel for Mrs. Maggie Howell, a resident of this community for thirty years who passed away Monday morning, August 25.

Maggie Nelson, daughter of Hans L. and Christina H. Nelson was born at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, October 12, 1874 and passed away at Lusk, Wyoming, August 25, 1941, aged 66 years, 10 months and 14 days.

While yet a small child she with her parents moved to Iowa and a few years later to Nebraska and from there to South Dakota where she grew to young womanhood. On November 22, 1898 she was united in marriage to George Howell. To this union were born five children, four daughters and a son. The son and one daughter passed away in infancy. Her husband preceded her in death March 5, 1910.

In 1911 Mrs. Howell and her family moved to Wyoming taking up a homestead in the Hat Creek district about 19 miles north of Lusk. There she reared her children and exerted a wholesome influence upon the community. In response to her strenuous efforts the first school house in the Hat Creek district was built on her homestead with eight pupils attending the first term of school.

Mrs. Howell also helped to organize and maintain a Sunday School and was active in community affairs for many years. Some four years ago she moved to Lusk and had made her home with her two daughters, Mrs. Charles Zimmerman and Mrs. John East. She had been an invalid most of the time since moving to this community.

Mrs. Howell passed away Monday morning at 1:20 a.m., at the home of Mrs. Zimmerman. She leaves to mourn her passing three daughters, Mrs. Chas. Zimmerman, Mrs. John East and Mrs. Fred Bryant all of this county; also four brothers and two sisters, Nels Nelson of Ocean Side, Calif., Hans Nelson of Avon, South Dakota; Wm. Nelson of Lusk, and Jess Nelson of Tyndal, South Dakota; Mrs. Cena Lewis of Avon, South Dakota and Mrs. Abbie Wickersham of Harrison, Nebraska, besides thirteen grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and a legion of friends.

Rev. P.H. Evans of the Lusk Baptist church was in charge of the services. Mrs. Lester Meade was accompanist at the organ, Pall Bearers were Edmund Cook, Beecher Strube, Dudley Fields, Charles Hunter, Bob Taylor and Lester Meade. Interment was in the Lusk cemetery.
