Chas F. Smith Dies at Alliance Hospital Monday
TRUCK DRIVER SUCCUMBS TO CANCER OF STOMACH AFTER LONG ILLNESS.
Body is Brought to Lusk Tuesday and Funeral Services Held That Afternoon
Once again the Grim Reaper has entered our community. On this instant the life of Charles F. Smith, better known as "Smithy," was taken.
Mr. Smith had been in poor health for several months. Some time ago he went to Edgemont with the hope that the sulphur baths there would prove beneficial. These proving of little avail, he was removed to the Alliance hospital, where on Monday, February 7th he answered the last call. Cancer of the stomach is given as the cause of his death.
On Tuesday, the remains, accompanied by his nephew, Wesley Groves of St. Fancis, S. Dak., were brought to Lusk and services, with Rev. H. H. Koontz officiating, were held that afternoon at the community church.
Many friends and associates gathered to pay their last respects to their departed friend ere he was laid to rest in the Lusk cemetery.
The undertaking department of the Universal store had charge of funeral arrangements.
Very little is known of Mr. Smith's past life other than that he was 64 years of age and that in 1898 he migrated to Deadwood, S. Dak., from Iowa. Leaving Deadwood in 1913, he went to Edgemont. Since that time he had been engaged in freighting and trucking int he vicinity of Edgemont and Lusk, making his home in this city for the past several years.
