Former Sheriff, Ben Brown, Dies

Ben F. Brown, 75, of Augusta, Kan., former sheriff of Niobrara County, died last Wednesday at the Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado, Kan. Funeral services were held Saturday at Augusta at the Dunsford Chapel with burial there in the Elmwood Cemetery.

He was born August 14, 1891, at Otto, Iowa, the son of Maynard T. and Eulila A. Brown. When a young man he homesteaded on Old Woman Creek in Wyoming in 1914.

He married Ellen Marie Diechman, June 11, 1918 at Douglas, and they were the parents of three sons and two daughters.

In 1920 the family moved to Keeline where they lived until the death of his wife in 1947. He served as Niobrara County Sheriff from 1948-54.

He married Rose M. Nietzke in Wichita, Kan., March 25, 1949. In 1955 they moved to Estes Park, Colo., and remained there until 1962 when they moved to Augusta, Kan.

He was a member of Harmony Masonic Lodge of Lusk, American Legion and Evangelical United Brethren Church of Augusta. He served in the U. S. Army during World War I.

An infant daughter, Eulila and a son William J. died previously.

Survivors include his widow, Rose; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Slagter, of Baher, Mont.; two sons, Robert of Cody and Harry of Lusk; a sister, Mrs. Sidna Gunn of Casper; a brother, Maynard of Redmond, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.
