TORRINGTON - Verle "Bud" Maxwell passed away on April 30, 2014 surrounded in love after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Lusk Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home, and friends may send condolences to family at www.colyerfuneralhome.com.

Bud was born the son of James and Eva (Foster) Maxwell on May 20, 1930 on the family farm in Astoria, Ill. It wasn't until he was 13 that he found out he was really born on May 16, 1930. Bud's mom was born on May 20, therefore everyone had told him he had been born on the 20th, as well.

He had two sisters growing up. His sisters left home when he was 3 years old. His aunt took he and his brother and put them in a home because no one could take care of them. He and his brother eventually moved back in with their father when Bud was 8. When Bud was 13, he got on a train by himself and came to Wyoming.

When Bud was 18, he joined the Navy. He was stationed in California and Nevada. He was on a crash fire truck. While on duty, an airplane wing clipped him in the leg and he broke it. He served until 1952. He retired as seaman first class.

Upon returning to Wyoming, he went to work for a rancher south of Douglas. He married, and they were later divorced.

Bud moved back to Illinois and then moved back to Henry, Neb., where he met Mabel Kamp. Bud and Mabel eventually moved to Torrington where they partnered together until Mabel's death in 2008.

Bud enjoyed his afternoon drives where he would stop by J&B, which he called "the office", for coffee, Pinnacle Bank to visit "the girls", the law office where he was known as "Security", then around the prison. He loved to have his adopted family around. The little ones always entertaining Grampa Bud.

Bud is survived by his nephew, Douglas Geyer and his wife, Sherry of Saint George, Utah; his adopted family and caretakers: Sherri Yorges, Stes and Frank Stellpflug, Haley, A.J. and Emma Gross, Chelsea, Cody, Courtney and Chasity Buckhaults, Frank "Bo" Stellpflug and Collin, Emily and Colby Yorges.
