James "Ray" Murray Valentine
J.M. Valentine Dies At Home in Shawnee
Death claimed another old-time resident of Niobrara county Saturday, when James Valentine, 56, died early that morning at his home in Shawnee, a victim of a heart ailment and complications.
Valentine, known around the community as "Ray" had been ailing for several days, but had always rallied to treatments administered by the physician or his wife. Sunday night he became very ill, and failed to respond to treatment after an attack and died at 5:00 o'clock Saturday morning. He was an old-timer here, coming to Wyoming in 1903, and living around the 20 Mile Creek, Manville, and Shawnee neighborhoods for thirty-six years. He was employed in those communities for some time, and later homesteaded on West 20 Mile Creek, north of Shawnee, where the family lived until his health began to fail him some time ago.
He is survived by his wife, a son, James and family, his mother, two sisters and two brothers, and numerous relatives.
Funeral services were conducted at the Manville Methodist Church in Manville at 2:30 Monday afternoon, under the direction of the Peet Mortuary, with Rev. Millard H. Marshall, pastor of the Lusk Congregational church officiating. A trio composed of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Howard and Mr. Howard's mother furnished the music. Pallbearers were: Tom York, Ray Dickerson, William Wanek, Charles Hitshew, Joe Stallman, and Clint Dern. Interment was made at the Manville cemetery.
