Gertrude Brooks

Services for Gertrude "Gertie" Brooks, 67, of Torrington, were held at St. Rose Catholic Church on October 1 with the Rev. J.E. Maroney officiating. She died Sept. 27 at Torrington Community Hospital.

Born Sept. 21, 1920 at Keeline, she was the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude Olds Kuhn.

She grew up in Niobrara County and graduated from Lusk High School. She attended St. Agnes Catholic Church in Alliance.

Mrs. Brooks received her nursing from Mercy Hospital in Denver in 1941 and following graduation, returned to Lusk where she was employed by the Niobrara County Hospital.

On March 9, 1946 she married William Lester Brooks, and they moved to Yoder in 1952 where they managed the Silver Tip Service Station until 1956 when they moved to Torrington.

In 1960 she began working at the Torrington Community Hospital, retiring in 1985. She had received a 25 year recognition award.

Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.

Survivors include seven daughters; Mrs. Don (Marlene) Wilhelm of Othello, WA, Gretchen Stringer, Mrs. Richard (Leslie) Stovall and Mrs. Michael (Yvonne) McCommon, all of Torrington, Mrs. John (Mary) Hudson of Morrill, NE, Eleanor Brooks and Mrs. Peter (Julie) Halstead, both of Sidney, NE; three sons, Bill of Torrington, Joe and Greg, both of Arvada, CO; one sister Mrs. Bert Gibson of Payson, AZ, 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial was made in Valley View Cemetery with Colyer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
