John Philip
JOHN PHILIP, SPENCER RESIDENT, DIES SUNDAY, MARCH 11
John Philip, who for many years lived in the northern part of this county, passed away Sunday morning,March 11, in the Lutheran Hospital at Hot Springs, South Dakota.
Mr. Philip, one of the remaining old-timers of the Spencer community, was born in Peterhead, Aberdeenshir(e), Scotland, in 1861.
In his youth he became a member of the Presbyterian Church. In 1890 Mr. Philip came to the United States, where he spent a few months in Minnesota, migrating farther westward about 1892, locating near Custer, So. Dak. Here he worked with Mr. McBeth, a prominent old-time stockman of that community.
About 1897 he filed on a homestead near Minnekahta, So. Dak., and entered the livestock business with Emmet Arnold, who is well known by all the old-timers around Edgemont.
Having spent 17 years in this locality, Mr. Philip was united in marriage to Miss Maude Durrin. After a honeymoon spent taking a trip back to Scotland, Mr. and Mrs. Philip bought a ranch near Spencer, Wyo., where the later years of his life were spent, with the exception of the last three years. Due to advancing age and gradually failing health, Mr. Philip was forced to dispose of his ranch and move back to Edgemont, where he purchased a home for Mrs. Philip and himself.
After a lifetime of hard work in the livestock business, in which he was intensely interested, he was not one to be completely inactive and could often be seen by his neighbors mowing the lawn, doing carpenter work and always managing to keep busy.
Becoming quite ill on March 7, Mr. Philip entered the hospital in Hot Springs, So. Dak., where he gradually grew weaker, and passed away the morning of March 11.
Mr. Philip leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Maude Philip; his daughter, Maryann Brewster, and three grandsons, Philip, Stanford, and James William.
