Florence Ione Canaday

Florence Ione (Boyd) Canaday, 94, passed away on March 27, 2013 in Cheyenne. Florence was born on February 25, 1919 to Bertha Mill and Stewart W. 'Dade' Boyd in Casper, Wyo. In 1936, she graduated from Lusk High School and went on to attend Colorado Woman's College. By the fall of 1938, she had transferred to the University of Wyoming and graduated in June of 1940 with a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science with minors in both English and Commerce. While at the University of Wyoming she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

On Sept. 30, 1944, she married William (Bill) T. Canaday who served in the Army's 76th infantry division in the European Theatre of World War II from 1941 to 1945, attaining the rank of captain. Mr. and Mrs. Canaday moved to Douglas in 1948 where they owned and operated Platte Valley Motors, a General Motors dealership, until they retired in 1972.

Florence was a member for 75 years of the Woodbine chapter of the Order of the Eastern Stars and a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Douglas Wyoming. In 1980 Bill passed away, and in his memory she added the bells, chimes and clock to the church. Florence loved spending time in the mountains at their rustic cabin, playing bridge, traveling and spending time with friends. There was never any guessing on what Florence was thinking as she would be sure and tell you and she was full of spunk.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; Virginia J. Canaday Manfull, sister-in-law; and Robert F.(Bob) Canaday, brother-in-law. She is survived by nieces, nephews and several cousins. A special thanks is extended to Keith Ivester, Darlene Knight, Aleta Ducat and the many caregivers and friends in Douglas for all the care and comfort provided to Florence over the last few years. Graveside services were held on Tuesday April 2, 2013 at 2 p.m. in Lusk Wyoming. In lieu of flowers, the family would request memorial donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church in Douglas, Wyoming at PO Box 1419, 82633 or St. Georges Episcopal Church in Lusk, Wyoming at PO Box 38, 82225.
