John Logan Brewster
John Logan Brewster, 83 year old Ten Sleep resident passed away peacefully at his home in Ten Sleep on March 15, 2013.
Logan was born on June 16, 1929 in Edgemont, South Dakota to John Byron and Maybelle Karene (Wiley) Brewster. His father was a government trapper, which allowed the family to move around Wyoming and live in many different areas around the state. During his high school years, he excelled in football and basketball. He was such a good player that Douglas High School recruited him and Don Jacobs to play. They even furnished them with a place to stay in the basement of the High School so they could live within the boundaries of the district.
Following graduation, Logan went to work on Grandfather Brewster's Ranch on the Old Woman Creek by Red Bird. While he worked here he also courted the love of his life, Katherine Lewis. The two were united in holy matrimony on June 1, 1949 in Douglas. After they were married, the couple lived on Lance Creek for a while. In 1957 they relocated to Ten Sleep where they purchased a ranch from Len Everett. This became their life's dream as the birth of JB Brewster & Son Ranch became a reality. Many improvements have been made by the hard working hands of Logan and his son, Tom.
Logan taught his family the value of hard work, commitment and perseverance. His "don't quit" attitude has been passed on through the generations. He loved taking his grandchildren on the cow trail when they were little. They took turns riding in front of him on the horse for hours, sometimes even sleeping within the comfort and care of his loving arms. He also passed on his love for sports to his grandchildren by making a basketball hoop and having it up by his shop so they could practice. He never missed any games that his grandchildren participated in. He was also a faithful fan of the Wyoming Cowboys and Denver Broncos, seldom missing a game.
Logan was a member and later director of the Big Horn Basin Feeder Cattle Association. He was the director of the Soil Conservation District for many years. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and shooting, especially muzzle loading. The Big Horn Basin Muzzleloaders Club was like a second family to him. He also liked collecting and polishing rocks to make them into jewelry. In 2009 he was awarded the Ag Citizen of the year by the Washakie County Ag Ambassadors. During his later years he loved to sit and reminisce of the days gone by. His memory was sharp and names never escaped him. Once you were introduced, he called you by name from then on. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Clarence.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Katherine and his son Tom (Sherry) of the family ranch. Three grandchildren: Ashlea (Rod) Salzman of Worland, Mark Brewster of Ten Sleep, and Andrea (Spencer) Woody of Cody, WY; great grandchildren: Caleb, Bryce, Delanie and Ethan Salzman of Worland.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2013 at the Ten Sleep Cemetery with Rev. Houston Green officiating. A light luncheon and reception will follow at the United Methodist Church in Ten Sleep following the services. Memorial donations may be made to the Cowboy Joe Club in care of Bryant Funeral Home, PO Box 524, Worland, WY 82401. Online condolences may be made at www.bryantfuneralhomeonline.com. Bryant Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
