95 Year Old Pioneer Dies in Douglas
Marcus Nelson, 95, pioneer of Niobrara and Converse counties, died at his home in Douglas Friday, July 22. Funeral services were held at the Stark Funeral Chapel Tuesday, July 26, with Rev. Lindeman, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating.
He was born in Saabe, near Aalborg, Denmark, February 26, 1860. Coming to America in 1881 he made his home for a time with his brother, Nicholas, and family at West Branch, Ia. After taking up a land claim in South Dakota he moved to Lusk where he worked until 1896. In that year he joined the gold rush to the Yukon and spent ten years in the Klondike.
Mr. Nelson returned to Niobrara County and settled on a ranch on Dogie Creek and still later to Douglas.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews living in Iowa and Minnesota.
