Marie Howard
Funeral services for Marie Cornelia Saylor Howard were held at the Methodist Church in Harrison on May 2, 1987.
Marie was born June 2, 1910, the second oldest of nine children born to Joseph and Fonda Saylor. She attended school in Iowa graduating from high school in Winterset, Iowa.
Marie married Virgil David Howard on August 27, 1927 at Odel, Iowa. They moved to Harrison in the fall of 1929 where Virgie was employed on the ranch of his uncle, O.L. Fox. During the 1930's they ranched and farmed at different places in Sioux County.
A daughter, Virgie Marie was born in 1935 and died at birth. A son, Leonard Joseph, was born March 21, 1940.
In 1944 they bought the Frank and John Bannan ranch in the Highland community, where they lived until Virgie's death in 1975 and Marie moved into Harrison.
Marie was a well known educator. She received her degree from Chadron State College. First teaching in one room country schools, she then started teaching first and second grades and continued to do so for nine years at the Harrison Elementary School. She was elected County Superintendent of the schools and was Welfare director until her retirement in 1975.
Marie was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church, Highland Extension Club, Rebecca Lodge, VFW Auxiliary and the Sunshine Senior Citizens Center.
Surviving are her son Leonard, his wife Marilyn, grandson Lance and granddaughter Kelley Jo all of Fergus Falls, MN; brothers Dale and Marion of Des Moines, IA and Bill of Golden, CO; sisters Maxine McGennis of Stuart, IA and Fannie Doyle of Harrison.
She was preceded in death by he husband Virgil, parents, infant daughter Virgie Marie, brother Glen and sisters Dorothy and Corinne.
