Goldie passed away in Crawford, Nebraska on July 14, 2012 at the age of 98. She was born on December 2, 1913 as the third child of William and Anna (Jebens) Locker in Scotia, Nebraska. When she was a child, the family moved to a farm near Glen, Nebraska where she grew up with her 10 siblings, Irene, Russel, Cloyd, Jess, Milo, Betty, Francis, Dorothea, Mary, and Maysie. She attended grade school and high school in Glen, and Chadron State College where she earned her teaching certificate. She then taught rural schools in Sioux County for several years.
She married Fred Hamaker in 1938. They had two sons, Dave and Criss, whom they raised on the family ranch south of what was Andrews, Nebraska. Besides helping with the ranch work, Goldie found time to sew western shirts for Fred and the boys and quilts for each of her grandchildren. She and Fred coaxed the family into starting a dance band. They played for dances and community functions around the area with Goldie on the banjo, Fred on the drums, and the boys on saxophones or guitar. She and Fred raised sheep, horses, and Angus cattle until 1974 when they moved to Crawford for retirement. She was a wonderful cook, famous for her pies and "suet pudding" at holiday functions. Their home was a favorite gathering place for family and friends on the 4th of July to watch the parade and to picnic in their garage.
Goldie worked at the Crawford Livestock Market for thirty years. Her favorite activities were reading, sewing, playing cards, and visiting with friends. She was active in the Eastern Star, Eagles, and various other community organizations.
She is survived by her sisters, Francis Nation of Marysville, Washington and Dorothea Pearman of Arkansas City, Kansas; sister-in-law Dorthy Meradith of Hemingford, Nebraska; sons, Dave (Judy) of Lusk, Wyoming and Criss (Ruth) of Harrison, Nebraska; grandchildren, Cindy (Mike) Bergstrom, Steve (Crystal) Hamaker, Traci Didier, Tonya (Joe) Gluth, Tessa Hamaker, Monte (Lorie) Hamaker; and ten great grandchildren.
