Mari Nelson
Mother of George Nelson Dies at Age of 95, in Minnesota
Word was received Saturday by George M. Nelson, Keeline, of the death of his aged mother, Marie Nelson of Grand Meadow, Minnesota.
Mrs. Mari Nelson, for 65 years a resident of Mower County, Minnesota, passed peacefully away at the age of 95 years and 26 days, having perfect health until three weeks before her death. A stroke on Friday afternoon hastened the coming of the end.
Mari Engebraaten was born at Honefos, in Ringerike, Oslo Province, Norway, on December 24, 1839, and here also was united in marriage to Martin Nelson on December 12, 1863. Mr. Nelson emigrated to America in 1868, establishing a home for himself and family in the Little Bear Creek settlement. The year following, in 1869, Mrs. Nelson braved the dangers of a stormy Atlantic with two small children, in order to be reunited with her husband in the new land. It took courage, but she was equal to the occasion, conquering every difficulty in her way. A happy reunion it was. For a period of 42 years they were privileged to share each other's joys and sorrows. Mr. Nelson passed to his reward on April 9, 1911, at the age of 67 years.
Left to mourn the loss of this beloved mother are five sons and one daughter. And, remarkable to relate, she is survived by three sisters at Oslo, Norway, ranging in age 89, 91, and 93 years.
Funeral services were conducted at the Bear Creek Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Nelson was an active church worker and a devoted mother.
One by one the pioneers pass on to the other side. They have left us a rich and goodly heritage. It is ours to cherish and carry on.
Blessed is your memory, mother.
- Cora Nelson.
