ORVIN DAVIS IS INSTANTLY KILLED IN CAR WRECK NEAR HARRISON, NEB., MONDAY
Funeral Held Thursday for Manager of Local Gamble Agency
Orvin Davis, 25 years old, manager of the local Gamble Stores Agency, was instantly killed at about noon, Monday, May 10, when his car ran off the road and turned over several times, on Highway 20, about four miles east of Harrison, Nebraska.
Davis was on his way to Chadron on business, and, from accounts of those near the scene of the accident, was traveling at a rapid rate of speed, in excess of 80 miles an hour.
His car topped a slight rise in the road, and then completely left the road, turning over several times. Davis was thrown through the door of the car, and some witnesses say he landed about 75 feet from the car. A boy plowing in the field nearby declared that Davis was hurled through the air a distance of 50 feet before the body struck the plowed ground in the field.
Frank Christian, of the Hudson-Terraplane agency here, says Davis passed him a few seconds before the accident. Christian was traveling about 65 miles an hour, and says the Davis car passe him "like he was standing still."
A few minutes after the accident Dr. Long of Harrison came along and picked up Davis, who was still alive, and started for Lusk with him. He stopped in Harrison to phone to the Lusk Hospital to get the operating room ready for an emergency operation. Resuming his journey toward Lusk, Dr. Long discovered, when about 5 miles west of Harrison, that Davis had expired, and he turned around and went back to Harrison with the body. The time of his death was 12:10.
Orvin Davis was born at Blue Rapids, Kansas, June 17, 1911. He grew to manhood there, clerked in stores and worked in creameries. He came to Lusk in the spring of 1933 to work in the Kilmer Creamery here, and his pleasing personality won for him a host of friends. He is survived by his father and mother, a brother and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held from the Congregational Church at 2:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon, with Rev. P. H. Evans officiating. Interment was made in the Lusk Cemetery, with arrangements in charge of the Peet Mortuary.
Pallbearers were: Roscoe Kilmer, Willis Kilmer, Venus Kilmer, Myron Kilmer, James, Tenney and Robert Schloatman.
