Louis Berggren, Pioneer Stockman, Passes Away at Hot Springs at Age of 80

Deceased Was Resident of This Section of Wyoming For Almost Half a Century; Funeral Services Held From Congregational Church Tuesday

Louis Berggren, 80 years old, who homesteaded north of Lusk in 1886, and has been a resident here ever since, passed away at a hospital in Hot Springs, South Dakota, last Sunday, February 3, following an illness lasting over a period of several months.

Funeral services were held from the Congregational Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. Williams, Congregational minister of Crawford, officiating. Interment was made in the Lusk cemetery, arrangements being in charge of the Midwest Mortuary.

Pallbearers were Frank W. DeCastro, Chris Joss, E. A. Hitz, Harry Hargraves, Russell Bradley and Dan Goddard.

Music was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. H. J. Templeton, Mrs. Robert Taylor, Ford B. Kuns and R. A. Faulk, with Mrs. Floyd Deuel as accompanist.

Mr. Berggren had been in failing health for some time, and a few weeks ago he was taken to a hospital in Hot Springs, in the hope that his health would be improved, but he grew steadily worse until the end came Sunday.

Louis Berggren was born in Sweden on December 30, 1854, being a little over 80 years of age at the time of death. After serving his military enlistment in Sweden, he came as a young man to the United States. He first settled in Knox County, Illinois. In 1883 he moved to Beowawe, Nevada. On August 11, 1884, he was united in marriage to Nellie Berggren, at Elko, Nevada. In the spring of 1886 they moved to Lusk, Wyoming, taking up a homestead just north of where Lusk now stands, and this was his home for the balance of his life, and where he reared a fine family. Here five children were born - Lewell and Esther, who died in infancy; Olive Lewell, now the wife of Ed Stewart of Lusk; Ivy Gorsuch, of Merchantville, New Jersey, and John Berggren, of Lusk. Besides these and his wife, nine grandchildren also survive.

Mr. and Mrs. Berggren were married fifty years last August and celebrated their golden wedding at that time.

For almost a half century Mr. Berggren was in the livestock business near Lusk. He was a man of frugal habits, was strictly honest in all his dealings, and was a good friend and neighbor.

Although the gravestone uses the spelling "Lewis", the first name spelling "Louis" is used here, as this is the spelling in the obituary, as well the obituaries of daughter Olive Stewart and Louis' wife Nellie.
