John "Kid" L. Pate

JOHN L. PATE DIES AT SHERIDAN, DEC. 21

John L. Pate, who will be remembered by his old friends in Lusk as "Kid" Pate, died December 21, at his home in Story at the age of 71 years. Funeral services were held at the Champion Funeral Home of Sheridan, December 28. Interment was at the Sheridan Cemetery.

John L. Pate, born January 5, 1874, at Junction City, Kansas, came to Lusk with his parents by covered wagon when he was 13 years old. When only 14 years of age he worked with the roundup wagons. He worked at the LZ ranch, which was located near Node. Harry C. Snyder was then foreman of the ranch. He was also employed at the 4J ranch south of Rawhide Buttes. After his marriage to Sarah Saffell, he and his bride made their home in and near Buffalo in Johnson county for a few years. They later moved back to the Lusk country and located north of Lusk, where he engaged in the stock business for a few years. Moving with their family of two children back to Johnson and Sheridan counties, Mr. and Mrs. Pate made their home in and near Sheridan and Buffalo until the time of his death.

Mr. and Mrs. Pate celebrated their golden wedding anniversary just a month before his death. Mr. Pate was a member of the Elks Lodge and was baptized in the Presbyterian church.

Besides Mrs. Pate, the following relatives survive: Two daughters, Mrs. Lila Verley of Sheridan, and Mrs. Nora Rawlings of Big Goose, Wyo.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters.
