A Pioneer Passes Away

Few of those who came to Lusk when it was first laid out on the plains of Wyoming, a struggling infant, have remained to watch its development, but among those who remained, adding his mite of assistance to its betterment, was Robt. Knittle. He was past middle life when he came from Nebraska to the little town of Lusk, but gladly cast his lot here. He was an honest man and tried to instill into his boys and girls the principles of honesty to the best of his ability.

Ever since he came to our community he has worked hard at the various kinds of work that falls to the lot of the plain laboring man, until a little less than a year ago, when he was taken ill. Hopes were entertained for his recovery until a couple of weeks ago, when he broke his leg by getting into bed. In his weakened condition it proved more than the worn out machinery of the body could repair and at 6 o'clock Monday evening he closed his eyes to awaken in that land where the weary are at rest.

Funeral services were conducted from the house Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the mortal remains of Robert Knittle were laid to rest in the Lusk cemetery among those he had known in the years gone by.

Robert Knittle was born at Markendorf, Germany, January 24, 1838. When a boy his parents moved to Hohonwalde, where he grew up, and for many years was overseer and game keeper in the government forest reserve. He was married in 1867 to Louisa Gersdorf, two children being born to that union, the oldest one dying when a child. His wife died in 1873 and the following year he was married to Caroline Hoffman, six children being born to this union, one of which died in infancy. In 1884 he came to America with his family, locating in Nebraska. In 1888 he came to Lusk, where he resided almost continuously until his death, at the time of which he was 71 years, six months and two days old. A wife, six children and eight grandchildren survive him.
