Private Derk J. Wieten died Oct. 9, 1918, killed in action while serving as an infantryman with American expeditionary forces in France. He will be greatly missed, but we know he gave his life for a good cause, as all good Americans were willing to do.
He bravely went for God to fight,
With heart aflame and soul alight;
Against the savage Hun, whose pride
The laws of God and man defied;
Who slewed the mother and her child;
Who maidens sweet and pure defiled.
He did not go to "feed the guns,"
He went to save from ruthless Huns,
His home and country forever to be
A guardian of democracy.
