Ruby ELizabeth (West) Brott
Ruby Elizabeth (West) Brott, 85, passed away at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb. on Sunday, March 28, 2010 with her family by her side. Ruby's wishes were to have family and friends graveside services at the Crawford cemetery on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Sheila Taylor officiating. Friends and family who wish may call at the Jones Mortuary on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 from 1-7 p.m. Memorials may be given to The Nebraska Commission For The Blind And Visually Impaired or the Mitchell United Methodist Church. Ruby was born April 26, 1924 six miles south of Van Tassell, Wyo. on the family farm to Victor and Elsie (Turner) West. She was the fourth of five children. She attended the Lewis country school and was the last class to graduate from the Van Tassell High School in 1942. She was salutatorian of her class.
Ruby married James Richard Rufus Brott on Nov. 10, 1943 in Harrison, Neb. at the Methodist Church while James was home on leave from the army. To this union three children were born; Sandra, Dennis, and Vicky. When James returned to the service, Ruby returned to Lusk, Wyo. to continue working as a telephone operator, which she enjoyed. James was discharged in 1945, they moved to the Brott family farm in the Squaw Mound area fourteen miles southeast of Crawford. They lived there until James' death in 1981. In the fall of 1981 Ruby moved to Crawford. She worked as a cook at the Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home. In March 1989 she moved to Mitchell, Nebraska to be near her daughter, Vicky. Ruby was a member of the following: Squaw Mound Extension Club, Willow Creek Sunday School, United Methodist Church, and War Dads Auxiliary at Crawford, Glad Hour Garden Club, and Senior Center in Mitchell.
Ruby was blessed with a green thumb with her love for flowers and garden. Wherever she lived, many people stopped to admire her flowers. Among her hobbies she enjoyed were ceramics, photography, tole painting, sewing, and needlecraft. She enjoyed wild life, especially deer and bird watching. She also enjoyed cooking for her family.
She is survived by her son Dennis (Geraldine) Brott of Crawford, NE, daughters Vicky (Roy) Stoll of Mitchell, NE, Sandra (Dale) Buckley of Harrison, NE. nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, sister-in-law Dorothy West of Whitney, NE, and nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband James, parents Victor and Elsie West, brothers Clarence, Roy, and Frank, sister Leota Solick.
