Earl "Melvin" Mellott
Earl "Melvin" Mellott, 81, of Moorcroft, Wyo., passed away at his home on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Moorcroft, with Pastor Donavon Voigt officiating. Full military burial will take place at the Moorcroft Cemetery. Visitation was from 9:30 a.m.. until 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday at the church.
Melvin was born to Earl and Katherine (Thompson) Mellott on Jan. 8, 1928 in Moorcroft, Wyo. Melvin was raised on the family ranch north of Moorcroft on the D Road. He attended country school for his first eight years and graduated from Moorcroft High School in 1945 as valedictorian of his class.
In 1948, at the age of 20, he enlisted in the United States Army. In January 1950 his father had a stroke so he was released to come home to take care of the ranch. September of 1950, because he was in the reserves, he was called back into active duty and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He received his honorable discharge from the US Army in August of 1951.
September 20, 1954 he was united in marriage to Donna Horlocker in Rapid City, SD at the Presbyterian Manse. To this union five wonderful children were born; Lynn Dewey of Moorcroft, Cris Mellott of Post Falls, Idaho, Marilyn Nelson of Lusk, Cindy Hurley of Casper, and Jon Mellott of Lusk, twenty-seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Besides Melvin's wife also surviving are Melvin's three sisters; Phyllis Butts of Bigfork, Mont.; Babe Kottraba of Moorcroft and Dorothy Mulholland of Casper.
Melvin was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Richard Huether in 1986.
