Helen Irene Blackmore

Helen I. Blackmore was born June 15, 1928 at the family homestead in the divide community north of Lusk and passed away July 13, 2009 at the age of 81, in her home in Garland, Texas. She was the seventh child in the blended family of Myra (Mollie) Hughes-Stigile and Edwin Stigile.

She attended the Node country school through the 10th grade. She graduated from Lusk High School with the class of 1945. After the death of her first husband Hubert Surratt in 1949 Helen married Bruce (Gene) Blackmore in 1951.

They later divorced in 1984. She is survived by two sons, Tony Blackmore of Arlington, Texas and R. Gene Blackmore and wife, Dolores of Mesquite,Texas; two daughters, Cindy Rushing and husband, Mike of Rowlett, Texas and Janet Martin and husband, Ed of Richardson, Texas; and one sister Norma Rae Patterson of Tyler, Texas. Eight grandchildren Ronald Blackmore, Angie Blackmore McCallment, Wayne Blackmore, Michael Johnson Jr., Sherry Johnson Jones, Edwin Martin, J.D. Martin, Tim Martin; four step grandchildren David Crowhurst, Terry Crowhurst, Will Rushing, and Michael Rushing. Eight great-grandchildren Cassie Blackmore, Trivett Jones, Jacobee Jones, Jastin Jones, Jessica Johnson, Tanner McCallment, Gabriel Martin, Madeline Martin; five step great grandchildren Ellie Rushing, Zo? Rushing, Cheyenne Crowhurst, Phillip Crowhurst, and Antonio Crowhurst, one great-great grandchild Amelia Wilken and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin Stigile and Mollie Stigile-McCormick; two sisters Merna Stigile, and Mildred Airhood-Shoopman; three brothers Bill Stigile, Bob Stigile and Kenneth Airhood, her first husband Hubert Surratt, and one grandchild Michael Abernathy.

After moving to the Dallas area Helen worked for 28 years at Anthem Insurance as a compliance Analyst. She also served for over ten years as president and other board positions of the homeowners association in her community. After she retired in 1994 she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling and the many trips back to Lusk for school reunions with family and friends.
