Emmitt Eddy Takes Own Life With .22 Rifle Here Thursday

Funeral services for Emmitt Eddy, 22, who took his life by shooting himself in the right temple with a .22 rifle last Thursday morning, were conducted from the Peet Chapel on Monday at two o'clock, with Weiten-Dupes Post of the American Legion in charge.

Rev. Clyde E. Hampton officiated at the service with the songs, "Shall We Meet Beyond the River" and "Saved By Grace," being sung by Mrs. A. B. DeCastro, Rev. Lawrence Juell and Mr. and Mrs. Lafe Culver, Jr., with Mrs. J. P. Watson accompanying on the chapel organ.

The casket bearers were Claude I. Shepherd, Ray Taylor, Robert Vollmer, Sherman Woods, Robert Brown and Harry Brown.

A military salute was fired at the cemetery by members of the National Guard.

The lifeless body of young Eddy was discovered by his 12-year-old brother, about 5 o'clock Thursday evening, in his car which had been parked in front of the family home all day.

Coroner George Earl Peet and County Health Officer Dr. W. E. Reckling were notified and after investigating the case, decided that an inquest was unnecessary, in view of the fact that a farewell note, which the mother identified as that of her son's handwriting, was found in the car with the body, and made it apparent that the tragedy was a case of suicide.

Eddy had been employed at the O. E. Maxfield ranch, but had been ill with a severe cold and had come to town the previous Tuesday, but had spent only part of the time at the family home, so they were not unduly alarmed when he failed to appear all day Thursday.

BORN NEAR KEELINE
Emmitt Ray Eddy, the son of Clayton and Charlotte Eddy, was born on the Eddy ranch near Keeline, August 17, 1925, and attended the rural schools in that community until entering the Manville High School, where he graduated in 1943, so that he could enlist in the Navy.

His date of enlistment was January 26, of that same year, and he was sent immediately to Farragut, Idaho, where he was trained as a baker and attained the rank of baker second class.

He served for more than three and a half years, most of which time he was in the Asiatic Pacific waters. He was honorably discharged at Shoemaker, Calif., on August 16, 1946.

Last spring his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Eddy, purchased the Gilbert Bernbeck residence on Oak street and moved to Lusk from their ranch.

Besides his parents, he is survived by five brothers, Leonard, Larry, Edgar, Hubert and Lyle, all of Lusk, and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Terry of Laramie, Wyo., and Mrs. Emma Rustad of Minnesota.
