Wyoma Hales
Wyoma Hales, age 78 of Lusk, passed away on Saturday, April 27, at the Torrington Community Hospital. A funeral service was held Tuesday April 30, at 2 p.m. at the Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk with Pastor Mark Lohr officiating.
Wyoma Fay Brunckhorst Hales was born on February 15, 1924, in Harrison, Neb. She was the youngest daughter of William and Fay Porter Brunckhorst. She grew up on the family farm 14 miles east of Lusk in the Van Tassell community. After attending a small rural school through the eighth grade, she graduated from Lusk High School in 1942.
On September 22, 1942, she married William S. Hales in Harrison, Neb. They ranched in the Hat Creek area from 1946 until they retired and moved to Lusk in 1988. They were parents to five children: Janice, Betty, Lee, Sam and a daughter who died at birth.
She dedicated her life to her faith and belief in family. The "farmer" in Wyoma showed itself every spring when it was time to plant the large garden she had while on the ranch, or all the flower gardens around the house after moving to town. Her skills as a seamstress and craftperson were obvious throughout her life. She made clothes for the family, did knitting, crocheting, and many other craft projects, and later loved making quilts. The research and compiling of family history that she completed will be used for generations to come.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Janice Downing, a granddaughter, Breyden Hales, and a sister, Burma Brunckhorst.
Survivors include her husband William (Bill) of Lusk; three children, Betty Schomberg of Pierce, Neb., Lee Hales of the family ranch, Sam Hales of Casper; six grandchildren: Steve Downing, Curtis Downing, Chad Schomberg, Barry Schomberg, Chancy Hales and Trisha Hales; two sisters, Catherine Wilson of Harrison, Neb., and Mary Alice Sides of Douglas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established to the "Special Touch" room at the Torrington Community Hospital or the Niobrara County Library Foundation.
