Funeral Services Held for Pioneer Resident Sunday

Final rites over the remains of Mrs. Lula Corinne Reed, wife of Henry L. Reed, of Covina, Calif., who passed away at a hospital in that city on Saturday, August 4th, were conducted here last Sunday, August 12th. Mrs. Reed died following an operation climaxing an illness of several months' duration.

Services were held at the Congregational church at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. Stuart Anderson, pastor, officiating. A large number of friends - many of them whose acquaintance dated back to the pioneer days when Mrs. Reed first came to this state, were present at the services to pay their last respects to one they had highly respected and admired for many years, and who had seen the progress of Wyoming from virgin territory to its present rank.

Following the services at the church the remains were conveyed to the Lusk cemetery, where a final brief ceremony was given, and the remains lowered to their final resting place in the family burial plot. Floral tributes, the expression of friends of long-time standing, were banked high around the grave.

The music at the church was arranged by Mrs. Anna C. Gray, another pioneer resident here, and a life-long friend of the deceased. A mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. Floyd Deuel, Mrs. Robert Taylor, Ford B. Kuns and O. P. Harnagel, sang favorite songs of the deceased. Miss Alice Fowler accompanied at the piano.

The pall bearers, all of the early-day group, were D. E. Goddard, Harry Hargraves, John Agnew, Dudley Fields, Jurdgen Lorenzen and Fred Root. Six other old-time friends made up the ranks of honorary pall bearers and these were Jacob MIll, E. B. Willson, A. L. Miller, Frank DeCastro, Edw. M. Arnold and H. B. Card. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Midwest Funeral Home.

Surviving Mrs. Reed are her husband, H. L. Reed, of Covina, Calif., and two step-daughters, Mrs. Pearl Streever, of Billings, Mont., and Mrs. Belle Cox of Cody, Wyo. Mr. Reed, in company with Jesse Hall, former Lusk resident and now a neighbor and warm friends of Mr. Reed in California, accompanied the body to this city.

OBITUARY

Mrs. Lula Corinne Hand

Lula Corinne Hand was born at Dallas, Texas. She passed away at a hospital in Covina, California, on Saturday, August 4th, following an operation nine days before.

The girlhood days of the deceased were spent in Dallas and other points in Texas, during which time she completed her grade and high school education. Following her high school graduation Miss Hand entered Hollins College graduating from that institution four years later. She continued her membership in the alumni of the Hollins College until the time of her death.

In the early '80's Miss Hand came to this state locating in this city. Her arrival at that time affiliates her with the pioneers of the West, and her experiences in those early years were similar in all respects to all those who helped make the history of this great state. She knew the conditions of those years; she underwent the hardships and the privations always encountered in new territory. And she met with individuals from all areas of the country, who had come to battle in this new field. From these she acquired a sympathetic understanding of people and their difficulties and this trait became one of her most outstanding characteristics.

In 1893 she was married to Henry L. Reed of this city, and they, in a year, established their home in their house on Elm street, which has continued to be their legal residence since that time.

In the years that followed, business affiliations took Mr. and Mrs. Reed to Gillette, Wyo., Omaha, Nebr., and a number of other points, but for the past nine years, they have spent most of their time near Covina, California, although they have returned to their home here on a number of occasions during that period.

In early life, Mrs. Reed was affiliated with the Baptist church, but upon coming to this country, in the absence of an active Baptist organization, she became interested in the work of the Congregational church. She was an ardent and faithful supporter of this church, and contributed liberally in many ways towards its growth and present standing in the community.

When the original Congregational church structure (which is now known as the Baptist church) was dedicated, Mrs. Reed sang in the choir at the dedication ceremonies. Talented in voice and piano, she aided materially in its services for many years. She also participated whole-heartedly in the activities of the church's working organizations.

Mrs. Reed had a most pleasing personality - one which radiated the grace and charm of a lady of true southern type and this gained for her a warm friend through every acquaintance. She was a lover of beauty - not of the glamorous, but that possessed of the qualities of quiet richness and gentility.

Mrs. Reed is survived by her husband Henry L. Reed and two step-daughters, Mrs. Pearl Streever, of Billings, Mont., and Mrs. Belle Cox, of Cody, Wyoming.

Her passing, although it brings deepest sorrow to her family and a multitude of friends, may be looked upon as the conclusion of a life well-live, and one which may well be taken as an inspiration by those whose lives and work here remain unfinished.

The remains of the deceased were brought to this city for interment in the family plot in the Lusk cemetery, arriving here last Friday. Funeral services were conducted from the Congregational church at 2 o'clock p.m., Sunday, August 12th, Rev. Stuart Anderson, pastor, officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of the Midwest mortuary of this city.
