She was born on March 15, 1936 to Richard H. & Evalyn (Ruble) Meents in River Falls, WI. She was educated in the Campus School of Wisconsin State College and graduated from River Falls High School in 1953. She continued her education at Wisconsin State College (now the University of Wisconsin-River Falls), graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education in the fields of Biology, Geology and Library Science. In later years she took graduate courses at the University of Northern Colorado and also became certified in elementary education.
Music was an important part of Marlie's life. She was proficient in piano, clarinet, violin and the antique pump organ. She received vocal training and in her youth performed at marriage and funeral services as a soloist. During Marlie's high school and college years, she was a member of orchestra and several choirs and bands. She was a former member of the First Congregational Church vocal and bell choirs of Greeley, the Greeley Chorale and the First Congregational Church choir of Charles City, IA.

In the fall of 1957 she began her teaching career as a biology and earth science teacher at Millford CT High School. She was also employed in the Alumni office at Yale University in New Haven where her husband attended graduate school. As Marlie, Don and their family lived in several states, Marlie continued to serve as a substitute teacher in the public school systems in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado and Iowa. Marlie's love of research allowed her to help people over her 17 years as a reference librarian at Weld County Library. She also worked at J.C. Penney, from which she retired in 2004.
Marlie and her family moved to Greeley in 1969. She served as a member of the Accountability and the Family Life Education Curriculum committees in Weld Co. School Dist. #6. In the early 1970's she initiated the parent volunteer program at Brentwood Elementary School which was duplicated throughout the District and continues today. She was active in the American Association of University Women.
The loves of Marlie's life were her children and seven grandsons. She spent the last 20 years attending the sporting events and school activities of her "boys," never missing an event.
