Darwin D. "Holy" Mackrill

Darwin D. "Holy" Mackrill, 79, of Scottsbluff, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb. after a courageous battle with cancer.

His memorial service will be held 10 a.m., Friday, February 20, 2009, at First United Methodist Church of Gering with Pastor Lauren Ekdahl officiating. Inurnment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering with military honors provided by Nebraska Army National Guard.

Darwin was born January 18, 1930, in Gering, Nebraska to Carl and Grace (Predmore) Mackrill. He received his education in Gering and Melbeta.

Darwin enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1948, in Scottsbluff. He served Company C 5th Infantry Regiman. Later in his military career he served in Occupation Forces in Korea and Hawaii. While in Korea he was injured in battle and received the Purple Heart. He spent eleven months in the Navy Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He married Lavona (Gardner) Mackrill on December 8th 1954. To this union three daughters were born.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW. He joined the Iron Workers Local 454 in Casper, Wyoming in 1961 until his death. He was an iron worker for 20 years. In 1989, he graduated from Mason City Auctioneering College.

Darwin enjoyed people. He could be found at Country Kitchen or The Goodwill Store. He loved to visit and never met a stranger. One of his greatest pleasures in life was giving to others.

He is survived by his daughters, Teri (Bill) Hayward of Hyannis, Sheri (Jim) Jordan of Lusk, Wyo. and Tamara (Rod) Graves of Scottsbluff, Neb.; grandchildren, Crystal Tirado, Rodney and Nathan Graves and Hobie and Willie Hayward; great-grandchildren, Colby, Rodney III and Forrest; brother, Don Mackrill of Minatare, Neb.; and sister, Gloria Martin of Casper, Wyo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Delmer and Carl; sister, Grace; and granddaughter, Tonya Jordan.
