Funeral for Mrs. Brewster, Member Of Pioneer Family, is Held Thursday
Funeral services for Mrs. Charles Logan Brewster, 86, pioneer resident of Niobrara County, were held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. from Peet Chapel with Rev. Jacob Nein officiating. Burial was in the Edgemont Cemetery. She had been in failing health for the past two years.
A mixed quartet composed of Neoma Taylor, Mrs. Robert Bramlet, Dr. Richard Collins and Harry Lyon sang "Tumbling, Tumble Weeds" and "God Be With you." Mrs. J. P. Watson was organist.
Active pallbearers were Phillip Brewster, Stan Brewster, James Brewster, Logan Brewster, Clarence Moulton and John DeGering. Honorary pallbearers were Everett Bird, Dudley Fields, C. E. Marvin, Chris Christensen, George Gibson, Albert DeGering, Ray DeGering, Richard Pfister, Sr., and Carl Spacht.
Julia Inez Brewster was born July 16, 1872 at Point Pleasant, W. Va. She was the eldest daughter of John Taylor and Harriet Maupin Hogg. Most of her childhood was spent near Point Pleasant on her father's farm. She was educated there and completed a fine arts course at Barboursville College in West Virginia.
In 1896 the Hogg family moved to Wyoming and filed on land at the head of Lance Creek and the Cheyenne River. The family later moved to Edgemont to be closer to school.
In 1897 she married Charles Logan Brewster of Lead, S. D. The couple made their home at Lead where Mr. Brewster was a contractor in the Homestake Gold Mine. They moved back to Wyoming and established their own ranch which is known as the Bar X Bar Ranch. Here she reared her family, two sons and two daughters, later moving to Edgemont where the children were educated.
For the past 12 years Mr. and Mrs. Brewster have spent the winters in California.
Mrs. Brewster showed great talent in her many oil paintings. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, a member of Hesperian Rebekah Lodge No. 34 of Edgemont of which she was secretary and past noble grand and very active in church work.
Survivors include her husband, one daughter, Inez E. Kelly, Long Beach, Calif.; two sons John Byron Brewster of Tensleep and Stanford Van Lear Brewster of Hat Creek. A brother, Ethan Allen Hogg of Lusk, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.
Her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. John Hogg, two brothers, Jim and Will Hogg; two sisters, Sylvia Marchant and Elvira Brown; a daughter, Ardis Elvira Darden, and a grandson, Neal Charles Sprague, previously died.
