Jane Arlene Farnam
Jane Arlene Farnam
Jane Arlene Farnum, daughter of Tressie Merwin Powell and his wife Ethelyn, nee Collamore, was born in Harrison, Neb., on April 22, 1923, the youngest of three children. She grew up in Harrison and graduated from Sioux County High School in 1941. Arlene attended Colorado Women's College in Denver, graduating in 1943. During World War II, Arlene worked at Fort Robinson near Crawford, Neb., where German prisoners of war were housed. In 1947, she traveled to Tamworth, N.H., to visit a friend from home, Maxine Moulton. During the visit she met Whipple W. "Whip" Farnum, who offered Arlene and Maxine a ride while they were out walking. Whip and Arlene were married at the Wonalancet Chapel on March 12, 1947. This union was blessed with four children: Jane, Ann, William, and Walter.
Arlene and Whip lived for five years in South Hampton, Long Island, N.Y., before returning to New Hampshire. They raised their children first on the Wonalancet Whiteface Farm, and then in Chocorua and Tamworth. Arlene was a loving wife and mother who worked many years at Remick Brothers ("The Other Store") in Tamworth. She attended St. Andrews-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church and was a member of the Onway Club, the local Christmas Club and library volunteer. She enjoyed bird watching, working in her garden and crafts.
Arlene died June 18, 1994 at her home in Tamworth. Preceded in death by her parents, her brother William Powell and her husband, she is loved and remembered by her children: Jane Beard of Bellevue, Wash; Ann Lambert of North Hampton, N. H.; William of Tamworth, N.H.; and Walter of Weare, N.H.; a sister, Georgia Powell of Harrison and nine grandchildren.
She is loved by all of us and will be missed by all who knew her.
