Carl E. DeGroot Dies Suddenly Monday Morning

The death of Carl E. DeGroot, 73, a resident of Lusk for the past 28 years, came as a shock to his many friends here, when it became known that he had died at the Spencer Hospital Monday morning, having been admitted to the hospital only the day before. His death was attributed to an attack of bronchial pneumonia.

Mr. DeGroot had engaged in the business of a salesman for many years which occupation brought him in contact with an unusually large number of acquaintances and friends over a widespread area. He had a wide knowledge of public affairs, both local and national ahd his interest in these things permitted him to understand and discuss the problems of those with which he came in contact.

Carl Everett DeGroot was born Jan. 8, 1879 at Girard, Kans., the youngest of five children of John Clinton and Amanda Jane Smith DeGroot.

When he was but a small boy the family moved from Kansas to Colorado, locating near Canon Croeek, where his father engaged in farming and ranching. In 1893 when he was only 14, his mother died and he spent the remaining years of his youth in that vicinity.

As a young man he moved to Lost Cabin, Wyo., where he engaged in sheep raising, later disposing of these interests and purchasing a sawmill in the Big Horn Mountains, which he operated for a number of years.

On May 16, 1909 he married Maude Alice Maxon, the couple making their home in Shoshoni, while Mr. DeGroot continued active operation of the sawmill in the timberland country. In 1924 he disposed of the mill and the family moved to Lusk.

Here he became engaged as a salesman, which occupation he continued throughout the remainder of his life, having been affiliated with several prominent nationally known concerns.

His passing leaves to mourn, his wife, Maude; four sons, Everette Clinton, Riverton; Carl Junior, Lance Creek; Val Richard, Denton, Tex.; and John Alden, Denver; and four daughters, Mrs. Magaret Sturman, Mrs. Dorothy Tenney and Mrs. Ada M. Vogel, all of Lusk, and Mrs. Phyllis Manning, of Fort Wayne, Ind. Three sons preceded him in death, James and Daniel in infancy, and Donald died suddenly Aug. 11, 1943 during World War II while under intensive infantry maneuvers at Camp Brunswick, Ga.

Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. Laura Farmer of Durango, Colo.; and one brother, Dan T. DeGroot, who resides in San Francisco, Calif; 17 grandchildren, and a number of nephews and nieces.

Mr. DeGroot was a charter member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Shoshoni, where he served as noble grand. He became a member of Riverton Lodge No. 48 Feb. 10, 1912 when the Shoshoni and Riverton lodges combined into one organization. He transferred his membership to Custer Lodge No. 21, I.O.O.F., Feb 27, 1936, and was an active member here at the time of his death.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Peet Chapel on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. Jacob Nein officiating. Graveside services will be conducted by members of Custer Lodge No. 21, I.O.O.F., with interment in the Lusk Cemetery.

Last Rites Held For Carl DeGroot

Final rites for Carl E. DeGroot, who died Apr. 7 at the Spencer Hospital, were conducted from the Peet Chapel Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with Rev. Jacob Nein, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating.

Music was furnished by a male quartet composed of George Gibson, Rex Yocum, Don Unruh and Don Housh, accompanied by Mrs. J. P. Watson.

Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery where members of Custer Lodge No. 21, I.O.O.F. conferred riutalisitc rites. Casket bearers were Roscoe Kilmer, A. F. DeCastro, George L. Miller, John Sturman, and Menno C. Kaan of Lusk and Dr. Addison DeCastro of Hay Springs, Nebr.

Out-of-town relatives here for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Carl DeGroot of Lance Creek, Mr. and Mrs. John DeGroot of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Phyllis Manning of Fort Wayne, Ind., Val DeGroot of Denton, Tex., Mr. and Mrs. Everette DeGroot of Riverton, Wyo., Laura Farmer, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Farmer and Mrs. Howard Foster, of Durango, Colo.
