M.J. McCormick, Respected Citizen, Dies Very Suddenly

Community Shocked by Death of Old-Time Rancher at Home Sunday; Legion Conducts Military Funeral in Lusk Tuesday

The community was shocked to learn of the sudden death last Sunday morning of M. J. McCormick, for many years a highly respected citizen of the county, a former county commissioner of Niobrara county, a cavalryman in the Spanish-American war, and a successful rancher, who has operated a ranch six miles northeast of Lusk for many years.

Mr. McCormick had been sick only about a week, and what appeared to be a mild case of influenza developed into pneumonia, and he passed away at about 9:30 o'clock Sunday morning.

Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church in Lusk, Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. B. F. Farrar conducting the church services and the local post of the American Legion having charge of the ceremonies at the cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of the Peet Mortuary. Both services were beautiful and impressive. A quartet of mixed voices furnished the music and the Rev. B. F. Farrar preached a comforting sermon. At the cemetery, the military funeral was in charge of the Legion post, led by Commander Frank A. Barrett and assisted by all officers of the post and a firing squad.

The pallbearers were John Thode, John Cordell, John F. Harkln, Harry Hargraves, Charles Elliott and Chris Madsen.

OBITUARY
Martin Jesse McCormick was born at Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, August 8, 1869, and departed this life October 27, 1929, of pneumonia.

When very small his parents came to Empire, Michigan, where he grew to manhood. When the Spanish-American War broke out he volunteered and served in the United States Cavalry during the war. Afterward he went to Flandreau, South Dakota, where he was married on November 26, 1898, to Miss Jennie Stewart. In September, 1909, the family came to Lusk, where they filed a homestead six miles northeast of town, where they have since resided. In 1917 Mr. McCormick was elected as a member of the Board of County Commissioners of this county and served one term.

He is survived by his wife, son Jesse, daughter Margaret, brother James of Boulder, Colo., and sister, Emma Lowery, of Empire, Mich.
