Louis J. Bowen

Services for Louis J. Bowen, 82, of Wheatland were held Friday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Manville Community Church with Pastor Chan Bayne officiating.

Bowen passed from this life on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland.

Louis was born at home on the Wheatland Flats, April 12, 1916, the son of LeRoy L. and Luella (Jesmer) Bowen.

He left Wheatland at age 18, journeying through the south, arriving at his aunt's farm in King Ferry, N.Y.

He met Edna, his wife-to-be, at the adjacent Bowman family farm.

They were married June 17, 1937, in the Church of the Brethren. To this union four children were born.

Together they built two businesses, a service station with bulk gas, ice and coal delivery, and a dream home for Edna.

In 1952 they sold both businesses, moved to Wyoming and became ranchers.

Louis was always involved in his community, serving on school boards and as a Boy Scout leader.

He and his wife moved back to Wheatland in 1989 where he resided until his death.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Edna; son and daughter-in-law, Arlo L. and Betty Bowen of Wheatland; daughter and son-in-law, Catherine Dawn and Gerald Hicks of Torrington; daughter and son-in-law Judy and David Bredthauer of Lusk; a brother, Joe, a sister, Anna Bowen Holm Duffy and sister-in-law, Melissa "Mikey" Bowen all of Wheatland; son-in-law, Ryland Roetman of Arkansas; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Bowen Snell Maul, Eileen Bowen Cook and Charlotte Bowen Winburn Markham; brother, Arlo F. Bowen and daughter, Shirley Ann Roetman.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Pat Bowen, Jerry Bowen, Bob Bowen, Rick Bowen, Gene Winburn, Larry Winburn, Buck Roetman, Colin Roetman, Brett Roetman, Dirk Bowen, Justin Hendrickson, Ben Hendrickson and Lee Hendrickson.
