Lois Mae Sturman

Lois Mae Sturman passed away on June 15, 2008. In 1924 Lois Parsons was born in Harrison, Neb. She was raised with her three sisters: Phyllis, Connie, and Jackie. Lois was valedictorian of her high school where she participated in many plays and musicals. Her love of the arts was a source of lifetime enjoyment. After World War II Lois and Phyllis served as office assistants for the United States Army Occupation Forces in Germany. She never forgot this experience, and it provided her lasting memories of a small town young woman seeing the world for the first time. In 1947 Lois met Kenneth Sturman in Van Tassel, Wyo. They married a year later. After a few stops along the way, they moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where they lived for over fifty years.

Lois was an avid gardener and reader her entire life. Through her reading she remained engaged with the outside world despite living in an isolated part of the country. She was enamored with Wyoming and Western Nebraska and was known to have quipped, "There are not many of us, but we are the type of people who make this country great." She was immensely devoted to her parents, Bertha and Jack Parsons, and often took her family to visit them in Harrison, Neb.

Lois volunteered at the Laramie County Community College Adult Learning Center where she taught adults to read and write. She worked for the Wyoming Highway Department Bridge Division for many years. She raised two sons both of whom earned doctorate degrees: John Scott Sturman, M.D. and Samuel Lee Sturman, Ed.D. Each of her sons had four children: Clay, Stacia, Lauren, Molly, Whitney, Sean, Cole, and Shannon.

A private family service will be held in Cheyenne. Those wishing to donate to her memory may choose the charity of their choice.
