Ulysses S. Grant Agnew
Grant Agnew Passes Away At Hospital in Torrington; Funeral to Be in Lusk Friday
Grant Agnew, one of the best-known stockmen of this section, and an old resident of Wyoming, died at a hospital in Torrington at 6:10 Wednesday evening, January 2, of a complication of diseases. He had been in a critical condition for about three weeks and death has been expected for several days.
Mr. Agnew is an older brother of John Agnew, well-known sheep man, and also a brother of Mrs. R. C. Ord.
Funeral services will be held from the Midwest funeral parlors, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with interment in the local cemetery beside his mother, Mrs. Lydia Agnew, who passed away last year.
Mr. Agnew was brought from his ranch near Glendo to the Torrington hospital about three weeks ago, and at the time it was thought he was suffering from an attack of the flu. After arrival at the hospital it was found that he was suffering from diphtheria as well as the flu, and afterward Bright's disease developed, so complicating the attack that recovery was impossible. His wife, Mrs. Arline Agnew, assisted in nursing him at the hospital, and was in attendance day and night, so that she broke under the strain and is now in the hospital herself, and may not be able to attend the funeral services.
U. S. Grant Agnew was about 60 years old, and had been a resident of this section of Wyoming for many years, where he was highly respected for his many fine qualities and leaves a host of friends who will sincerely regret his death. He first came to the West when about 19 years of age, from Campton, Pennsylvania, and settled near Marsland, Neb., engaging in the agricultural and live stock business. He came to this section of Wyoming about 26 years ago, when he together with his father, his brother John Agnew and Robert C. Ord bought the old Rawhide Buttes ranch, known as the old Russell Thorp ranch, where the company engaged in general ranching and livestock business. John Agnew still owns the ranch.
Grant Agnew was also in the ranching business with his cousin, the late Martin C. Agnew, when they operated one of the largest ranches in the north part of the county, which they afterward sold to Tom Bell in 1908, and upon which is now located some of the best producing wells in the Lance Creek field. After a business venture in Chicago and New York, Mr. Agnew went to Whiteblossom, in the state of Washington, where he operated a fruit ranch located on the Columbia river. He returned to Wyoming about three years ago, and at the time of his death was engaged in the sheep business with ranges near Glendo.
Mr. Agnew was married in 1909 to Mrs. Arline Perkins, but there were no children. His other closest relatives surviving are his brother and sister, John Agnew and Mrs. Robert C. Ord.
