Charles Calhoun Services on Sunday

Last rites for Charles F. Calhoun were conducted from the Peet chapel on Sunday afternoon, November 11th.

Charles Fulton Calhoun, 69, former resident of this community, and one time commissioner of Niobrara County, died at the Lusk Hospital last Thursday evening, having undergone major surgery a few days previous.

Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun leased and operated the Silver Cliff Hotel here for a time and then moved to Upton, where they operate a hotel and have since made their home.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock, with Rev. Clyde Hampton officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Emerson Bonner and Mrs. Sam Thomas, Jr., accompanied by Mrs. J. P. Watson.

The casket bearers were Robert Taylor, Don Taylor, John Rice, E. L. McCall, C. A. Whelan and Winfred Seegrist.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. James Roberts of Lusk, a son, Foley Calhoun of Torrington, and a step-son, Gerald Shaw of Lusk.

C. F. CALHOUN HAD COLORFUL LIFE

Charles Fulton Calhoun, son of Edward and Anna Catherine Calhoun, was born December 26, 1875, at North Platte, Nebraska, one of seven children, only one of whom survives, Edward Cooper, of Casper.

In 1882 the family moved to Hermose, South Dakota. In 1888 they moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota. Here he received his education. In 1897 he, with one of his brothers, moved to Deadwood, where they started the first dray line in Deadwood.

In 1898 he married Susie Nellie Utley. To them were born two children, Coila Leona Roberts of Lusk and Fulton C. of Torrington.

In September, 1902, his wife died. On September 4, 1904, he married Mabel Alice Rushton at Spearfish, So. Dak. To them seven children were born, of whom four survive - Norton Ellis of Riverton, Mabel Alice Sides of Lusk, Warren E., in service in the South Pacific, and Blanche Milne of Gabbs, Nevada.

In 1912, Mr. Calhoun with his family moved to Van Tassell, where he continued in business. From 1916 to 1920 he served as county commissioner of Niobrara County.

His second wife died in May, 1919, and in December, 192O, at Rapid City, So. Dak., he was married to Mrs. Gertrude Augusta
Shaw.

In I921 the family moved to a ranch southeast of Lusk, where he resided until 1925, when he moved to a ranch on Owl Creek, near Thermopolis, where he lived until 1936.

From 1938 until 1940 he managed the Silver Cliff hotel in Lusk. In 1940 he moved to Upton, where he managed a hotel, moving picture theatre, and served as justice of the peace.

On Sunday, November 4, he was brought to Lusk, where an emergency surgery was performed. On Thursday, November 8, his condition became critical and at 8:30 p.m., he died.

Besides his wife and the above mentioned brother and six children, he leaves three step-children, Gerald Shaw of Lusk, Gloyd Shaw of Wichita, Kansas, and Mrs. Aldene Moore of Thermopolis; twenty-one grandchildren, eight set-grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one step-great grandchild, and a host of friends.

In the death of Mr. Calhoun, the West loses another one of its old members. Among his memories there were two outstanding historical incidents in which he participated. He was chosen as one of the cowboys to accompany Capt. Seth Bullock to the inauguration of Teddy Roosevelt as president, and that he furnished the vehicle which carried Calamity Jane to her grave on Mount Moriah in Deadwood.
