Estella L. Reynolds Dies In California

The Herald received a telegram from Mrs. Naomi Martin of San Bernardino, Calif., on Wednesday notifying them of the death of her mother, Mrs. Estella L. Reynolds on Tuesday night, Dec. 12.

Mrs. Reynolds was the widow of the late William M. Reynolds, pioneer resident of this community. They owned a ranch just south of Lusk which is now the property of James Hoblit and the fine home that Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds built many years ago is still a lovely home today.

No details as to funeral arrangements were given in the telegram. Mr. Reynolds is buried in the Lusk cemetery.

Mrs. Reynolds broke her hip several weeks ago and undoubtedly complications and her advanced age were the cause of her death. She made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Martin.

Ashes of Mrs. Wm. Reynolds to Be Interred at Lusk

Ashes of the late Mrs. Estella Reynolds, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Naomi Martin of San Bernardino, Calif., on Dec. 21, will be interred in the Lusk Cemetery. Note: Both the California Death Index and the Lusk Cemetery records record the death date as December 12.

She had been in failing health for a number of years but her death was the result of cerebral thrombosis following a hip fracture last July. She was 84.

Mrs. Reynolds was the daughter of early pioneer parents and was born at Ft. Laramie, Wyo., June 20, 1866, the third of eight daughters born to Jennie Robinson and Oliver P. Goodwin.

At the time of her birth, her father was employed by the United States government as a freighter from Fort Leavenworth, Kans. to Salt Lake City, Utah. Two years later he moved his family to Fort Collins, Colo., then to Bear Creek, Wyo. where the mother passed away in 1873.

Shortly after her mother's death, Mr. Goodwin purchased a ranch on Horse Creek and established a stage station, post office, general store and U.S. Cavalry supply station. It was here that the deceased grew to young womanhood and became the wife of William Marcus Reynolds on Nov. 24, 1881.

In 1883 they moved to their first home, the old New Hampshire Ranch at the head of Rawhide Creek. Later they sold this place and moved to another ranch on Six Mile Creek north of Torrington. In 1893 they purchased the old Newton Meadows Ranch south of Lusk where the family lived until 1916.

The ranch was then sold to the Baca family who resided there for a number of years and was later purchased by the James Hoblits who are still living there.

This was one of the fine ranches of the country and Mr. Reynolds was one of the first ranchers in this section to raise purebred Herefords.

Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds had seven children, three of whom survive. The eldest son, Thomas, died in infancy; Wm. Jr., and Millen (the elder daughter) succumbed to the onslaughts of diphtheria in 1899, George was killed in an automobile accident at Chadron in 1928 and Mr. Reynolds was killed by the fall from a horse at Quemado, N.Mex., in 1930. Those who survive are Lewis of Wanamaker, S. Dak.; Russell, of Springfield, Ore. and Naomi Martin of San Bernardino, Calif. Mrs. Reynolds is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted by the Right Rev. E.A. Drake, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in San Bernardino. A special commitment service was conducted also by the Gate City Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of which Mrs. Martin is a member. Mrs. Reynolds was a charter member of Niobrara Chapter No. 26 of Lusk and at the time of her death she held a life membership certificate. She had been a member of the order 51 years having joined at Casper in 1899.

Several old time Wyoming people attended the funeral. They were Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Hall of Covina, Charles Covington, of Santa Ana, Chester Edwards of Trona, and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Conors, of Le Moore, Calif. Mr. Conors is a nephew of the deceased.

Following the funeral services the body was cremated and the ashes will be returned to Lusk to be interred at the grave of her late husband.
