Erwin L. Bates Dies at Portland
Erwin L. Bates died at his home in Portland, Ore. on Aug. 12, at the age of 53 years, his death being the result of a back injury.
He was a brother of Lewis N. Bates of Lusk and was also a former resident of this community, having lived here from 1908 to 1923 when he moved to Walla Walla, Wash.
Erwin Levi Bates was born November 21, 1895 near Bassett, Nebr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hite Bates. When 13 years of age he came to Wyoming with his parents and located on a ranch near Lusk where he lived for 15 years and then moved to the state of Washington where he stayed for three years.
In 1924 he was married to Juanita Mary Brundage. In 1926 the family moved to Oregon and lived in Portland since 1946, where Mr. Bates was employed in the shipyards and later worked at the carpenter trade.
He belonged to the Boilermakers and Carpenter Unions and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral services were conducted August 16 at the "LIttle Chapel of Chimes" by Rev. Vivian Clark with interment in the Rose Hill Cemetery of Portland.
Survivors include his four children, Mrs. Helen May Parry of Parkland, Wash., Mrs. Audrey Nadine Goldman of Forest Grove, Ore., Dale Eugene and Deloris Ann of the family home; a sister Ilene Morrison of Astoria, Ore., and one brother Lewis N. Bates, Lusk, Wyo., and two grandchildren.
